The Trip That Changed My Life Essay - 984 Words

Asia was awesome! Everything, from the food I ate to the people I met, gave me a new perspective on life. I still cannot get over the fact that I have traveled to the other side of the world. This school program gave me many memorable experiences, allowed me to learn a lot about the culture of Asia, and introduced me to friends that Ill treasure for a life time. I knew that there was a reason I got to go, and while I was there I tried to make the most of such an opportunity. One of my most memorable experiences in Asia was my trip to the doctor. I knew that my slight fever and scratchy throat could be contributed to lack of sleep. With a twelve-hour time difference, I had the worst jet lag that was possible. Yet, the Secretariat†¦show more content†¦I stared at the tiles as I walked by them and I knew that it wasnt fair. nbsp; Although my Asian viral throat infection prevented me from being Group Speaker, I learned much in writing the paper on genetic engineering. The first thing I noticed was my fellow group members proficiency at English. I have taken four years of French in school. Yet, I am unable to write, speak or understand a word. On the other hand, the people in my group were able to express their opinions on scientific topics in a foreign tongue. Either American schools just dont place enough emphasis on learning other languages, or American children dont have the discipline to learn a second language. I refuse to believe that Americans are just stupid, but obviously something has gone wrong. While writing the paper I also enjoyed the interesting thoughts and ideas of my peers. In particular, I was fascinated with a solution to a problem caused by genetically engineered foods that was based on a concept from Jurassic Park. Such ideas have broadened my thinking and made me more aware of the proble ms facing us. In writing about genetic engineering, I not only learned about that field of science, but also about my fellow peers. nbsp; While in Asia I was determined to get a taste of the culture.
